Witkoff: Hamas is Afraid of Trump - and the Truth is, They Should Be

US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff recently addressed the families of remaining hostages, shedding light on the impact of US President Donald Trump's administration on the treatment of hostages by Hamas. According to recordings obtained by N12, Witkoff revealed that Hamas began treating hostages better after Trump's election in 2024, with several hostages reporting improved conditions.

“Edan [Alexander] told me that when President Trump was elected, they started treating him better,” Witkoff said during the meeting. He further emphasized that Hamas fears Trump, stating, “They’re afraid of him – and the truth is they should be.”

Diplomatic Efforts Key to Hostage Releases

Witkoff highlighted the critical role of diplomacy in securing hostage releases, acknowledging the success of the IDF in certain rescue operations but noting that the majority of releases ultimately rely on diplomatic channels.

“Statistically, far more hostages have been freed through diplomatic negotiations. That’s what really worked,” he said.

The Case of Matan Zangauker

Witkoff also spoke about Matan Zangauker, another hostage still in captivity who suffers from medical issues. Zangauker was held alongside Alexander until the latter’s release, after which Zangauker was left alone, worsening his circumstances.

“Edan’s release might hint at what could happen for everyone sitting in this room,” Witkoff told the families, suggesting that similar diplomatic efforts could lead to more releases.

Cooperation Across the Region

Once it became clear that Alexander’s release was possible, Witkoff explained that swift action followed, requiring cooperation from Egypt, Qatar, and Hamas, alongside strong backing from President Trump.

“We needed cooperation from the Egyptians, the Qataris, and, of course, from Hamas. We also needed strong backing from the president,” Witkoff noted, emphasizing the complex international dynamics involved in such negotiations.
