Actor Neal McDonough Says God Helped Him Endure Hollywood Blacklisting for Defending His Faith

Renowned actor Neal McDonough has shared his inspiring story of perseverance and faith as he remained true to his Christian beliefs within the often challenging environment of Hollywood. McDonough, currently appearing in theaters with the film Guns & Moses, revealed that he was blacklisted by major studios after refusing to participate in scenes that conflicted with his convictions and his respect for his wife.

A Costly Decision for Love and Values

McDonough, known for his roles in shows like Desperate Housewives, made a personal decision years ago to decline any kissing scenes with actresses. “I didn’t want to subject [my wife] Ruve to that kind of thing because it’s just weird,” the actor explained, highlighting the deep respect and love he has for his family.

As a result of this personal boundary, McDonough was dropped from projects and even lost his home and material possessions. This led to a difficult period in his life marked by alcoholism and self-pity.

Overcoming Adversity and Rediscovering Purpose

In an interview with CBN News, McDonough confessed that after hitting rock bottom, he chose to turn his life back to God, leaving behind addiction and depression. He found healing and a new sense of purpose in creating redemptive films that promote values and build bridges.

“I think when I fell into those issues, I was making it all about me, and not enough about Him… Eventually, I put the bottle down and returned to the Lord, finding healing.”

In Guns & Moses, McDonough plays a mayor who stands alongside a rabbi during times of adversity, conveying a message of hope, respect, and understanding between communities. The film emphasizes how “honoring God and loving your neighbor” can transform both lives and societies.

Advice to Fellow Christians

The actor encourages others who have faced rejection or hardship for standing by their ideals to keep their faith and trust in God’s purpose for their lives:

“You have to believe that if you have a God-given talent like mine, I know that if I put my faith in Him, He will help me get through anything.”

McDonough insists that it is possible to live according to biblical values even in hostile environments, and that every trial can become a powerful testimony. He adds that “it’s okay to have different thoughts,” and that the world needs more messages of love, not hate or division.
