An incident of heightened tension between the ultra-Orthodox community and Israeli military authorities took place this Tuesday in the Bukharim neighborhood, a district known for its large Haredi population in Jerusalem. According to the account of a mail carrier, several ultra-Orthodox youths intercepted him while he was on his regular delivery route and deliberately stole several official Israel Defense Forces (IDF) draft notices.
The postal worker reported that the individuals not only seized the letters but also tore them into pieces in full view of the public. He further stated that, after this act, the same individuals continued to follow him for part of his route, which left him feeling intimidated and harassed.
According to the formal complaint, the incident was not limited to the destruction of official correspondence. The mail carrier alleged that the windshield of his vehicle was also damaged, allegedly by one of the youths involved, which could constitute an additional offense of property damage.
The Jerusalem District Police confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched to clarify the events and identify those responsible. Authorities are reviewing security camera footage from the area and have collected witness statements to support the inquiry.
This incident takes place against the broader backdrop of ongoing tensions between certain ultra-Orthodox sectors and the State of Israel over mandatory military service. While most Israeli citizens are subject to conscription, much of the Haredi community strongly opposes the measure, citing religious grounds and the preservation of their traditional way of life.
