Hamas Agrees to Release Last Living U.S. Hostage in Gaza

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas has confirmed it will release Edan Alexander, the last known living American hostage in Gaza, as part of ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire, reopen blocked crossings, and resume humanitarian aid. Two Hamas officials informed The Associated Press that the release is anticipated within the next 48 hours.

U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, confirmed late Sunday that the agreement to release Alexander was made as a gesture of goodwill toward Trump, who is set to visit the Middle East this week. The move comes as the U.S. pushes to revive ceasefire talks in the 19-month conflict, amidst growing pressure from families of hostages and the over 2 million residents of Gaza under Israeli blockade.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office stated that the U.S. had notified it of the planned release, which will proceed "without compensation or conditions," potentially paving the way for broader negotiations.

Indirect talks between Hamas and the U.S. reportedly began five days ago, mediated by Egypt and Qatar. Khalil al-Hayyah, a senior Hamas leader, said the group is ready for intensive negotiations aimed at a long-term truce, including a broader prisoner exchange and the transfer of power in Gaza to an independent technocratic body.

Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli-American soldier who grew up in New Jersey, was captured during a Hamas-led attack on his base on October 7, 2023, which triggered the current conflict. His family has yet to respond to requests for comment.
