Earthquake Shakes Río Grande, Puerto Plata

National News – Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic – A 4.1-magnitude earthquake shook the community of Río Grande early Monday morning, causing concern among residents across various areas of the Cibao region.

Even with the calm of the early hours prevailing in the mountainous province of Puerto Plata, a subtle yet firm tremor woke many Dominicans, leaving them feeling both confused and fearful.

According to reports from the National Center for Seismology, the seismic event registered a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale and had its epicenter in the Río Grande municipal district, part of the municipality of Altamira.

The natural phenomenon was clearly felt in nearby towns such as Sosúa, Santiago de los Caballeros, and Mao, prompting response from both local residents and emergency services.

In neighborhoods like Cuesta Colorada and Gurabo, residents reported feeling the ground vibrate for several seconds. However, no injuries or material damages have been reported so far. Local authorities and Civil Protection units conducted preventive evaluations in areas closest to the epicenter.

Authorities are now urging the population to stay informed via official channels and to review family evacuation plans, especially in vulnerable zones in Puerto Plata and Santiago. Citizens are also advised to keep emergency kits on hand and remain alert to potential aftershocks, although experts consider the likelihood of significant follow-up events to be low.

According to the National Center for Seismology at UASD, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.2 kilometers, with the epicenter located 8.2 kilometers northeast of Altamira. This depth is classified as shallow, which explains why it was felt relatively strongly in several surrounding communities.
