OREM, Utah The gunman who assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk before fleeing from a rooftop into nearby woods remains at large more than 24 hours later, as federal investigators on Thursday urged the public’s help by releasing photos of the suspected perpetrator.
Investigators discovered key evidence, including a palm print, a shoe impression, and a high-powered hunting rifle left along the suspect’s escape route. However, no suspect has been publicly identified, and authorities have not determined a motive for what they are treating as the latest act of political violence shaking the United States.
Photos of an individual wearing a hat, sunglasses, a black long-sleeved shirt, and a backpack — alongside the announcement of a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest — underscored law enforcement’s reliance on public tips to solve the case. Two people briefly detained following the shooting at Utah Valley University were later released, prompting investigators to pursue fresh leads tied to another person of interest.
During a press conference with FBI Director Kash Patel, officials released a video showing the suspect sprinting across the rooftop of the building, leaping down, and fleeing into the woods. Authorities said the shooter left behind physical evidence, including a palm print, that could be critical to their identification. “We have people across the country working to bring this perpetrator to justice,” Patel said, adding that the FBI has already received more than 7,000 leads.
Officials also confirmed preparations are underway to pursue the death penalty.
The discovery of a Mauser .30-caliber bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel, along with ammunition, remains central to the investigation. Forensic testing of the weapon is ongoing at a federal lab.
The attack, carried out in broad daylight as Kirk addressed social issues at Utah Valley University, was captured in graphic videos widely shared online. The footage shows Kirk clutching his neck as blood poured down, shocking the audience and sparking panic.
President Donald Trump, who condemned the attack alongside Democratic leaders, announced that Kirk will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Vice President JD Vance and his wife traveled to Salt Lake City to meet Kirk’s family, with Vance praising Kirk’s pivotal role in mobilizing young Republicans and shaping the administration.
Kirk’s casket has been transported aboard Air Force Two to Phoenix, the headquarters of Turning Point USA, the youth organization he co-founded. Funeral details are pending, but Trump confirmed he plans to attend.
On campus, shaken students described scenes of fear as they barricaded themselves in classrooms for safety. Police continue to maintain a heavy presence around the university, which remains closed until further notice.
The assassination of Charlie Kirk — a polarizing but influential figure in American conservatism — has intensified concerns over rising political violence in the U.S., with leaders from both parties condemning the attack and calling for accountability.
