A pair of suspects wanted for the death of a young Air Force recruit after a jet ski hit-and-run on a Texas lake have been arrested, and both are reportedly illegal immigrants.
Daikerlyn Alejandra González González and a man with whom she allegedly fled from Grapevine Lake were arrested Tuesday after a standoff with police at their Dallas-area residence. González is accused of fatally striking 18-year-old Ava Moore with a jet ski while Moore was kayaking on the lake Sunday afternoon, and then fleeing the scene in the man's vehicle as bystanders tried in vain to save the teen.
Police distributed photos of González taken at the scene and managed to locate her and the other suspect (who has not yet been publicly identified) on Tuesday morning. Officers from the Dallas and Grapevine police departments, along with Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, used drones to monitor the house where the pair was hiding, before they finally surrendered.
Moore had recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was just weeks away from starting her basic training.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated that González, a Venezuelan national, and the other suspect were illegally present in the United States, and that Moore’s death should never have happened.
“Ava Moore’s tragic and senseless death was caused by an illegal alien who should have never been in our country in the first place,” said Paxton after the arrest.
Moore was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine, where she was pronounced dead, officials confirmed.
“My heart breaks for Ava’s family and friends. My prayers are with them as they face this tragedy,” Paxton added.
Moore, a basketball standout and 2024 graduate of Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, had recently completed studies at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School. She was visiting her parents during the holiday weekend when she made the trip to Grapevine Lake that would sadly be her last.
