National News | Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – Since the first day of the tragic collapse at the Jet Set nightclub, which resulted in the deaths of 234 people, a team of national and international experts has been quietly working to uncover the true causes of the incident, President Luis Abinader confirmed on Monday during his weekly press briefing.
“That is the commission that has been working on the report since day one,” emphasized the president, referring to the specialized group led by Leonardo Reyes Madera, director of the National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Infrastructure Vulnerability (Onesvie). The entity has coordinated the investigation independently, without the need for a presidential decree.
The technical team includes renowned figures in the field of structural and forensic engineering:
-
Eduardo Fierro, professor at the University of California, Berkeley, with vast experience in post-disaster analysis;
-
Máximo Corominas, structural pathologist from the prestigious Eduardo Torroja Institute in Spain;
-
Marcos Paniagua Yost, with advanced studies at the Catholic University of Chile;
-
Remy Luciano, expert in earthquake-resistant engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra.
Following the collapse that occurred in the early hours of April 8, the government activated this commission with the goal of conducting a rigorous technical study to shed light on the structural failures or possible negligence that may have led to the roof collapse of the iconic nightclub.
A preliminary report is expected within two weeks, and its findings will be submitted directly to the Office of the Attorney General, which will officially inform the public in accordance with legal procedure.
It was on April 10 that Homero Figueroa, the presidential spokesperson, officially announced the formation of the commission, emphasizing that the investigation would be carried out under principles of transparency, respecting the autonomy of the Public Ministry and avoiding premature judgments that could hinder the judicial process.
